The University of Texas at Austin prohibits discrimination based on religious beliefs, practices, and affiliation in all aspects of employment and education. This is mandated by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. UT Austin is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for individuals' sincerely held religious beliefs and practices, unless doing so would create an undue hardship on UT Austin. Generally, an accommodation will be considered an undue hardship it if will result in the inability of the employee to perform an essential function of their position.
Key Steps in the Process
If you need a workplace accommodation for a religious belief, practice, or observance, please follow these steps.
- Submit an Online Request: Employees should initiate the process by submitting the online request form for religious accommodation. Early submission is encouraged, and employees should submit a request for accommodation with as much advance notice as possible.
- Confirmation and Dialogue: After submitting the online form, a copy will be sent to the employee and their supervisor. The employee and their supervisor should then discuss the accommodation request. Both the employee and their supervisor have a responsibility to participate fully and cooperatively in the conversation.
- Questions and Decisions: For questions, contact IAA at ada@austin.utexas.edu. Any decisions regarding an employee’s request should be reported back to IAA.
Accommodation Concerns
If a supervisor has concerns about an employee's religious accommodation request, then IAA can provide assistance. They can evaluate the request to determine its feasibility and suggest alternative options if needed. IAA can also help facilitate communication between the employee and supervisor to find a mutually beneficial solution.
Confidentiality
IAA maintains all documentation related to an employee's request for religious accommodation. To protect confidentiality, access to religious accommodation requests and related materials will be restricted to those individuals who have a legitimate need to know This includes, but is not limited to, the employee, the manager or supervisory team, HR support staff, and IAA. Any unauthorized disclosure of confidential information about a religious accommodation request may result in disciplinary action.
