Texas Senate Bill 17 - Prohibition of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Activities

In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 17 into law, “Responsibility of Governing Boards Regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives,” which amends Texas Education Code 51.3525 effective January 1, 2024. Under this law, public institutions of higher education cannot engage in diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.

UT Policy and Working Guidance

On September 15, 2023, The University of Texas System provided initial guidance related to SB 17 through FAQs. On November 16, 2023, UT System approved UTS 197, Compliance with State Law Regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Institutions of Higher Education, effective January 1, 2024. While neither the FAQs nor UTS 197 covers every possible situation or nuance of the law, they provide the basic framework for UT Austin’s efforts to comply with Senate Bill 17’s requirements.
